Six real ways Kiwis are using portable cabin rentals from RentZone

Not enough space at home? Whether the living room is buried in Lego, your home office is the kitchen table, or your band is making enemies of the neighbours, a RentZone portable cabin is the flexible solution that arrives in days, ready to install.

Use Case 01 - Music Studio or Jam Room

The perfect jam space, right in your back yard

Playing music at home is one of the great joys of life, and one of the great sources of neighbour complaints. A RentZone cabin gives you a dedicated practice room away from the main house. Warm, insulated, and with a few acoustic panels, it becomes a proper music space.

Use Case 2 - Home Office

Work from home. Not from the kitchen table

A cabin office in your backyard gives you a proper separation between work and home. You walk out, you're at work. You walk back in, you're home. That boundary makes a real difference to focus and the ability to actually switch off.

Use Case 3 - Kids' Playroom

"I don't have room for the kids' stuff." Sound familiar?

The toys have a home. The kids have their own space they actually love. And you get your living room back. Walls, floors, surfaces and all. Cabin playrooms are warm, safe, and right on your property.

Use Case 4 - Teen or Young Adult Retreat

My child is growing and needs more independence

A cabin in the backyard gives teenagers their own space, one they'll actually want to spend time in. It becomes their retreat, their studio, their place to be. And the instruments live out there too. Everyone wins.

Great picks: Kowhai · Tawa · Kawakawa

Use Case - Home Salon

Your plumbing ready home salon, separate from your living space

Clients arrive to a professional space with its own entrance. Not through your hallway. Not past the kids' bedroom. Not navigating the laundry basket. Power & water connected and ready to trade from day one.

Great picks: Kawakawa · Kauri

Use Case 6 - Micro Business

Your business idea, without the scary lease

Test your concept on a 6-month hire. Build your customer base. If it works, extend or move to Rent to Buy. If it doesn't, two weeks' notice and the cabin is collected. Compare that to commercial lease exit costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a RentZone cabin as a music room or home studio?

Yes, a portable cabin makes an excellent music room or home studio. The cabins are fully insulated (walls, ceiling, and underfloor) which provides a solid base for sound management. Most customers add a few acoustic panels to significantly reduce sound bleed. Because the cabin sits away from the main house, noise impact on the rest of the household is much lower than a converted spare room.

Can I use a rental cabin for my home business?

Absolutely. Many of our customers use RentZone cabins for home-based businesses: salons, beauty studios, massage rooms, tutoring spaces, small offices, and more. A cabin gives you a professional space with its own entrance, keeping your business separate from your home. It’s ideal for businesses that require plumbing to choose a self-contained option.

How does electricity work in the cabin?

All RentZone cabins come with a 15m caravan-style power lead that connects to your existing household power supply (a standard 15-amp outlet). The cabins are electrically certified and RCD protected with smoke alarms installed.

Can I add plumbing to my cabin for a salon or studio?

Yes, select RentZone cabins are available with an ensuite or kitchenette, and our team can connect water and waste to your existing supply on delivery. This works well for salon wash basins, kitchenettes for site offices, or ensuite bathrooms for accommodation use. Plumbing connection is quoted separately.

What is the minimum hire term?

The minimum hire period is 6 months across all hire cabin types. After the initial term you can extend on a rolling basis or give two weeks’ notice to end the hire and arrange collection.

What is the difference between Rental Hire and Rent to Buy?

With Rental Hire, you’re paying for the use of the cabin for as long as you need it. It stays our property, and when you’re done you give two weeks’ notice and we collect it. Minimum term is 6 months, and it’s a great option if your need is temporary or you’re not ready to commit to ownership.

With Rent to Buy, your weekly payments work towards owning the cabin outright at the end of your agreement. You move in now with no large upfront cost, and over an agreed term (typically 3 to 6 years), the cabin becomes yours. It’s a pathway to ownership that doesn’t require a large deposit or a traditional mortgage. Rent to Buy finance agreements are provided through RZ Finance Limited, our own finance company.

In short: Rental Hire is flexible short-to-medium-term use. Rent to Buy is for people who want to keep it.

Is a cabin a good option for my teenager or young adult child?

It’s one of the smartest setups a family can have, and more people are doing it than you might think.

As your child gets older, you both naturally need more space. That’s healthy. A cabin on your property gives a teenager or young adult their own front door, their own space, and a real sense of independence, without the full cost and commitment of renting a flat or finding a room in a shared house.

The financial side is worth thinking about seriously. The gap between what a cabin hire costs and what flatting costs in most NZ cities is significant. If you can help your young adult cover the cabin hire and encourage them to save the difference, you’re giving them a genuine head start toward owning their own home one day. That’s a gift a lot of parents don’t realise they can offer.

You also stay close. Meals together are still easy. If something goes wrong, you’re right there. It’s independence with a safety net, which is exactly what the early adult years tend to need.

The same thinking applies for older family members too. A self-contained cabin on your property can be a wonderful option for a parent or grandparent who wants to stay close to family but keep their independence. It’s far more affordable than a granny flat build, and it can be set up or removed as circumstances change.
